WHO ARE WE?

Bicheeche Diidxa’ (Spread the Word/Pasa La Voz) is an academic–community collective working in the southern Isthmus of Tehuantepec to strengthen community organizing in the face of socioenvironmental disasters that accumulate over time.

We emerged after the 2017 earthquakes, but it quickly became clear that the crisis was never the event itself; it was the pervasive inequity that shaped both the scale of the impact and the inadequacy of every response that followed. In historically underserved regions like the Isthmus, communities do not exit one emergency before the next one begins. Events like earthquakes, floods, the COVID-19 pandemic, and urban violence continually intersect with long histories of dispossession and institutional abandonment. In these contexts, disasters are not exceptions. Disasters are the norm that already at-risk communities confront every day.

Therefore, we work to strengthen grassroots autonomy against reactive, extractive, and assistance-driven models that treat communities as passive recipients of aid. Instead of allowing knowledge on disaster risk to be produced far from the territory and returned only as an abstraction, we practice long-term Participatory Action Research (PAR). Through PAR, we co-produce grounded, multilingual, and multiscalar data with and for communities, and we return this knowledge in formats that advance local decision-making, intermunicipal coordination, and public advocacy.

What began as a student-led initiative is now an alliance of women, Indigenous people, queer folks, technicians, and academics with distinct yet complementary trajectories. Together, we translate across community, academia, and public policy, mobilizing financial and relational resources toward the territory while building relationships sustained by accountability rather than the media cycle of an emergency.
